Cicadas

Did you know cicadas have six short legs and they have a head with large eyes?

Firstly, Cicadas live in holes and in dark spaces underground when they are nymphs. The north Island clay bank cicadas live on clay banks and cliff faces.

Secondly eggs lies dormant over winter between 60 and 120 days. When they hatch the nymphs live underground for 4 or 5 years. They shed their skin 4 times then they dig to the surface.

Thirdly young cicadas have no wings. The adult cicadas have glassy wings with green, black and brown veins.

Female Cicadas can’t sing but male Cicadas can sing.

You might think Cicadas are ugly little things but Cicadas are a part of nature.
